Eating on the Trail, Martha Stewart style
When we started preparing for the trip, we split up the main organizational responsibilities. Among other things, I tackled gear and general planning, and Magge took food and first aid. Although you can resupply nearly completely from resources on or near the trail, that isn't Magge's style. Magge's style is to buy a food dehydrator, dry near 30 days worth of food, and plan mail drops to points along the trail. Perhaps after we get back, I'll get her to share a bit more, but for now, this is what the living room floor looks like:

A Long Walk in the Woods
Welcome to our hastily-designed blog covering our trek of half the Appalachian Trail. Due to the nature of this trip, compared to the last time we wrote about our travels, this website will be much more minimalist: less descriptive writing, shorter posts, and fewer pictures. It will function more like a log to keep family and friend notified that we're still breathing somewhere.
We'll be leaving from Springer Mountain, Georgia on March 30 and hope to get to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia by early June, which is nearly half of the entire Appalachian Trail Our A.T. Guide states that the distance is exactly 1,019 miles, and including the one mile backtrack we have to do at the beginning from the parking lot to the starting point, we have 1,020 miles to reach Harpers Ferry. We would love to be able to hike the entire trail, but we'll have to save the second half of the trail for the next time we have several months to kill (with me, who knows, it could very well be in a few years).
